You Can’t Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd 2
A short while ago I visited Elk Island National Park..After encountering a herd of bison in the Bison Paddock I ventured North to Astotin Lake, then through the north gate of the park to the town of Lamont for a coffee.
The coffee was a huge disappointment. I returned to the park through the north gate.
I came across a big guy like this as I rounded the first turn in the road.
All alone, he was strolling down the middle of the road. He “OWNED“ that road. No one was getting by. Cars stopped from both directions.
He swaggered past a pickup truck swaying his massive head in a passive-aggressive way. I could see the driver cautiously shift over away from that side of the truck.
I rolled down my window as I slowly followed the 2,000+ lb bison with sharp horns as he casually continued down the middle of the road past the truck.
The truck driver rolled down his as well. I spoke briefly with the excited, wide-eyed driver as he was catching his breath.
I followed the bison a little further.
Suddenly he stepped off the road and slipped into the bush. Hardly a leaf was troubled as he disappeared like a ghost into the trees.
It kind of gave me a fresh perspective on some of native bison stories.
