What’s Your Point?
The clip above is from a short animated film “The Point” (1971) by Harry Nilsson.
Its about an unusual kingdom (The Land of Point) in which everything and everybody is pointed – except for a young boy named Oblio. Despite his round head, Oblio has many friends. But an evil Count, jealous that Oblio is more popular than his own son, says that without a pointed head, Oblio is an outlaw. Along with his faithful dog Arrow, Oblio is exiled to the Pointless Forest. There they encounter a number of curious creatures, one of whom is the ‘Pointed Man’.
The Pointed Man, while pointing in all directions, proclaims; “A point in every direction is the same as no point at all”.
From his adventures, Oblio learns that it is not at all necessary to have a pointed head in order to have a point in life.
So… what is your point?
We all have an inherent need to have our own point of view. Yet we live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with other influences. It seems like the Pointed Man is in charge. We continually hear; do this, go here, buy that, join this, listen to this, use this…
Its tough to hang on to our own point of view. Or, maybe we are like the Pointed Man and we have so many points – we have no point at all.
One thing for sure, if our point of view points to Jesus we can maintain our focus on what is important.
Point to Jesus
