A flag has been hanging on our church sanctuary wall behind the stage for a number of months now. The first time I saw the flag I was reminded of Ezekiel 1:10 and Revelation 4:7 “The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.” I’ve contemplated the flag and these verses often.
What do you see?
When a person first looks at the flag they see the Hebrew letters. These letters spell out Shabach, the Hebrew word for praise (that is the shout). You can read more about that next week.
As you look closer you will discover other images.
The other thing they see is a Lion – but there is something else in that figure that causes most of us to study it with more interest.
There is a screaming Eagle in the white and its not all that difficult to see.
Visualizing the face of an Ape is much more challenging an image to find. I reference to the verses about, there may be the image of an Ox present, but I have yet to picture it.
Just the other Sunday, God revealed to me another reason for the flag and where it is in our church.
The Victory Church on the Rock motto is “Serve, Love, Lead”.
The Lion’s head is the most prominent and a Lion by nature tends to Lead.
The Eagle’s head is a little less obvious but it is easily found. An Eagle’s nature is to Love. They work hard to build their nest, they are patient to hatch their eggs, they provide food for their Eaglets, and they teach them to fly and how to find food
The Ape’s head is more difficult to find but once you see it you never look at the picture the same way again. An Ape’s nature is to Serve others. They are highly social and serve each other continually.
Serving in the church often goes on behind the scenes and is challenging to notice unless you know where to look. Yet, without service, the church is incomplete.
