Smoothies in the Summer
There she stood. She knew she should press on, but she was hesitant. She was going to meet with Jesus, and although she was excited to see Him, she was also a bit apprehensive. She knew He would have His smoothies again. Having tasted them in the past, she knew how wonderful they could be. But her life was different now, things had changed. She was busy. Had she gotten too busy for Him? She felt ashamed, knowing her apprehension was somewhat due to a lack of trust.
But, oh, those smoothies! She remembered those summers of old, Jesus would go to the kitchen to mix up His famous smoothies. The summer days had been hot, and she remembered that, somehow, those smoothies had brought deep satiation to her taste buds. Funny, she thought, to look forward to such a thing. Yet she did, and it spurred her on.
But wait? Who was that up ahead? It was Him. Her Jesus. He held two full glasses, one in each hand, and He smiled and waved as He approached her.
She gulped nervously. Could He really still want to meet with her? Yet, as He drew near, He placed the glasses onto the ground and pulled her in for a deep, warm hug. She returned the embrace, her anxiety and apprehension melting into His arms.
When He finally pulled away, He smiled and raised a finger. “Guess what I brought…” He winked as He picked up the glasses off the ground. “Can’t wait to share ’em with you!”
As she looked at the glasses, her apprehension returned. Could these be the same as last time? And if they weren’t, could they still be as good?
“Wh-what kind is it?” She asked hesitantly. Her hesitation did not dampen Jesus’ demeanor.
“Strawberry banana, with a few extra berries! I know how you love them berries…” He spoke with enthusiasm.
When she spoke next, her uncertainty was evident in her tone. “I-is it good? Are you sure you still want to share it with me? My life has changed so much…”
“Do you think that bothers me? I’m with you through it all you know! Just because your life changes, doesn’t mean I’ll stop making smoothies for you!”
She stared at Him, the anxiety showing in her eyes. “I… I don’t know…”
“Would you just try it?! Trust me, I think I know what flavors you like!”
She slowly took the glass from Jesus’ outstretched hand. Taking the straw into her mouth, she took a tiny sip. Once that sip hit her tongue, the next few that she took in were huge gulps. The memories of the past summers came flooding back as the taste flooded her mouth, and her taste buds danced with glee. She had missed this! A renewed sense of joy waved over her as the icy drink slid soothingly down her throat. Suddenly, all of that worry and apprehension were gone for good. She smiled and laughed, and took in more giant gulps.
“This is AMAZING!!!” She exclaimed. He laughed in return.
“So… as good as last time?”
She paused. Although this smoothie was different, it was still spectacular. Truthfully, it was hard to compare the two, the flavors were so profoundly different. Yet, there were elements of them that were the same, that berry taste that she loved so much. The flavors He chose made perfect sense to where she was at, and it caused her to stop in her tracks and just gaze at Him, knowingly.
She had a silly grin on her face, and she didn’t care. She was with Him, and all was as it should be. She was whole.
“YES! I think it’s even better!!” She finally responded.
A grin slowly spread across His face as well, one to match the silly one she wore. It made her laugh.
“I’m glad you like it! Oh, I forgot one thing…” He reached into His pocket and pulled out a small bag. He smiled as He handed it to her.
She looked at Him, confused. “What’s this?” She asked.
“That thing isn’t complete without the smarties and m and ms!”
