….No animals or hockey players were harmed in the writing of this post.
When Spaniards see something incredible in the bull fight they respond with shouts of “Olè! Olè!” It is an outward response to an inward sense of awe and excitement. The matador in capote along with the banderillas…umm….ok, not really our arena. To Canadianize it – I guess it’s like going to an Edmonton Oiler game and being drawn out of your seat and cheering a dazzling and unbelievable play. Ok, ok, maybe not anytime in the recent past but think wayyyyy back if you must. The last time I experienced what it is like to witness an “Olè” moment was in the 80’s dynasty and even this diehard HABS fan sat back in awe and knew I was witnessing an “Olè” moment. The crowd went nuts throwing nachos in the air and giving high fives and hugs to complete strangers 3 isles down and hey, I’m still smiling and reliving it 30 years later. Ok I know I was spoiled but I remember the regular melody of “Semenko to Gretzky to Kurri to Coffey to Gretzky SCOOOOOO OOOOORE!”.è
Our section would watch the replay and still not figure out how that puck went in. Did we analyze, only to celebrate it all the more. It is only the opposition that analyze to discredit it. I loved those Olè-r moments. It was everyone pulling together as a team that made it possible. Wayne didn’t get there by missing practices but by putting himself out there every day refining a God given ability. He helped his team become better. It required each member’s effort and encouragement to hoist that cup year after year.
My favorite player of all time on the Oilers has always been Dave Semenko who was on the ice for one purpose and one purpose only…. to protect Gretzky and allow Wayne to do what he was gifted at. Dave did not have a glamorous part on the team, he didn’t get a lot of praise… but I think Gretzky without Semenko could have led to numerous injuries to Wayne and less witnessing of greatness. In a write up about Dave it says:
“Dave wouldn’t score often, just 65 times in 575 NHL games, to go with 88 assists for 153 points. Wayne Gretzky had better single season scoring campaigns than Semenko had in his entire career! But that’s not why Semenko was on the team, it could be argued that without Semenko’s presence, Gretzky might not have been able to quite reach the scoring levels he did.”
It was never a one man show or one line show and they all knew it. Each member of the team had something to offer allowing perfect flow and we witnessed greatness. God’s church is a lot like that. There are so many ways in our church family we can express our own God given creativity and abilities for the rest of the world to see God’s Greatness. Those that hum, whistle, make up melodies in their heads while they clean the house may need to write it down or sing that in free worship time. Those who have a gift of compassion are often behind the scenes but have hundreds of hearts they have helped by flowing in their gifting. Those prayer warriors have our backs when illness strikes our loved ones. But don’t forget the other areas you can join in. If you are someone who needs to move around then you could be a dancer that shows the rest of us how to worship the REAL GREAT ONE. Maybe your gift is to grow our little ones in Sunday school, then just don’t let the legend of your abilities end secretly without your mark on the future…
You don’t need to be on a platform to create the ‘OLè moment’. Maybe you are the Dave Semenko of the church. (Don’t misunderstand me. If you have the ability I still don’t think you should knock the next visitor into next Wednesday if they walk up to shake PJ’s hand….although that would amuse me to no end) Most of us have something we give of ourselves naturally. It might not feel like a big deal to you but God has you on this team for a purpose. Your gift might not be the thing that visibly ‘saves’ a family but you might just set up the environment in the church for the team to reap the harvest and for God to get all the Glory because of because of something you can do. I just know we are a team that can only go as far as we all can give of ourselves, and this encourages me because I see you….there is a lot of talent out there. Serve.Love.Lead.
