Jesus initiated a clearance sale once. It was heavily weighted toward the “clearance” part and not so much on the “sale” part. But it was a market place and so there were “sales” happening although not directly with the clearance part. And if the goal of a Clearance Sale is actually to clear things – then Jesus was highly effective! So, technically it was more “Sale Clearance” than “Clearance Sale”.
I read this devotional a little while ago and I have thought about it and returned to it very often since first reading it. It continues to be life-giving and so i share it with you. I have started a routine of what i call “clearance sales” sometimes multiple times in a day. The interior space of my heart and the shelves of my mind (remember, I’m an man, therefore boxes on shelves) fill up quickly through out the day. A “clearance sale” allows Jesus to sort through everything that I’ve collected. A lot of stuff gets tossed out, and a few things get re-organized and re-prioritized. And it takes about 5 minutes.
On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving our those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of robbers.’ “ Mark 11:15-17
Devotional – Jesus’ intense passion for overturning of the tables in the temple courts ought to make us gasp. He knows if we don’t get God, invaluable treasures will be lost or obscured. We lose the space where we experience God’s unfiltered presence. We lose perspective on what is importance and what is not. We lose com-passion.
I have a need of such clearance
as the Saviour effected in the temple of Jerusalem
a riddance of clutter
of what is secondary
that blocks the way
to the all-important central emptiness
which is filled
with the presence of God alone.
Prayer – Lord, help me to see how much I lose when I lose you. My perspective on my life and all of life gets distorted when I don’t make space for you, obscuring your love for me. My life is the temple of your Presence – what is in my temple courts that needs clearance.

Then sit still and quiet long enough to let God at it. He’s very efficient.
